Shea Butter, where have you been all my life?, 1 Mar 2012

Shea butter is a wonderful product of nature that everyone should know about! It has so many uses - hair, skin, massage, treating mild skin irritations etc.

If you've never experienced shea butter before, it is of a hard and sticky consistency, so you may want to use a knife or other sharp-edged object to break off the amount you require. You can either melt it down to a thin, oily consistency by putting it in the microwave or on a radiator, or you can simply place a little piece in your palm and use your index finger or thumb to rub and apply pressure to melt it down into a pomade-like consistency. I currently use this method to apply the shea butter to my skin in order to reduce the appearance of a few stretch marks. I think it will work to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, regardless of skin tone, but it may take some time, so if you try shea butter for this reason, don't be disheartened if you see very little or no effect after a month, but continue to use it and it will pay off - unless you have an adverse reaction to it, then obviously discontinue use. If you have sensitive skin, or you're not sure about the product, I recommend trying a smaller portion, like the 100g tub first.

I also use shea butter as a staple hair product by mixing about 50g shea butter with about 1.5tbsp extra virgin olive oil and about 1tbspn of a LUSH hair product (to make it smell nice); and I apply a little bit of the mixture to my hair (I have natural afro hair) every other day to leave it soft and moisturised - in case anyone out their needed any ideas.

The 500g tub is ample and will easily last me at least 3 months, I was shocked at the quantity when it arrived, and would be very amazed to see the 1kg tub! The product took about 5 days to arrive, which seemed like a long wait to me, but perhaps the company doesn't work over Valentine's, which is around the time I ordered it, as the 100g tub I tried first only took 3 days to arrive. This company packages their products well. Also, the consistency - and colour - of the shea butter may vary from tub to tub, for example my current tub (500g) consists of shea butter that is almost rock hard and a creamy yellow colour, but the previous tub I ordered (100g) consisted of shea butter that was softer than the current tub and more of an off-white colour.

I bought 500g of Organic Shea Butter Unrefined because I wanted to try it before I ordered the 1kg. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of Shea Butter that I received for the price I paid and the quality is fantastic. I use it on my skin and intend to mix it with some oils to make a moisturizing conditioner for my hair as I'm currently on the organic bandwagon. As I have read the butter makes the skin so soft and is even better on the lips. It is easily melted in the hands when rubbed together and is really soft. It comes as solid blocks in the container and a little goes a long way. Very good stuff.

Beautiful, natural, well priced product. Feels rather heavy when applying, and need to melt a bit with fingers, but then skin is non-greasy and silky smooth. Just amazing. Why so many people buy nasty cocktails of chemicals & rancid oils for their skin I cannot comprehend.

This product is just wonderful. Huge amount for the price, and lasts for ever.
This butter does not smell too strongly, although it is not refined.

The jar arrived with a crack in the lid, so I had to melt the content in hot water then pour it into a big glass jar for storage. I poured a small amount in a baby glass jar for every day use, and this is how it works in our house:
Each morning I fill out the sink with really hot water and let the baby jar sit in there while I shower.
When I'm done showering, the butter is liquid and I can easily pour a small amount in my hand to moisturize my entire body AND face. (if you tend to get zits from using this on your face, as I do, use another baby jar and mix a small amount of the butter with tea tree essential oil, or Jupiter's Beard extract for example).

When I'm done my husband does exactly the same.
Shea butter is the ONLY product that his extremely sensitive, eczema prone skin can take, and it takes it wonderfully well.

Edited to add: this product will start to go rancid after about 5 to 6 months, so great value for the amount and price.
You will find it leaves white marks on the inside of your dark clothes in the winter, but it washes away clean without any residue.

Added bonus: your clothes won't smell of rancid oil as they end up doing if you moisturize with vegetal oils such as almond.
The effect this has had on both our skins is undeniable: more supple, more elastic, I would even say slightly thicker too.
I don't think I'll ever stop buying this.

At first I wasn't sure, because I am not used to this consistency - it is very thick and you have to melt the butter in your hands before rubbing it into your skin. Initially I thought it seemed very greasy, but then I realised that it was because I was using too much or wasn't rubbing it in well enough. After using it for a week, I got used to it, and now I am hooked! I love that it is soooo moisturising, and having to work harder to rub/massage it in really stimulates my skin and makes it smoother. I use it on my feet, hands, shins, buttocks (good to smooth mild cellulite). Works on my lips too, if they get a little dry. The butter needs some minutes to soak in. If I dress right away, my clothes stick to my skin. But what a difference this cream/butter makes! Love it, love it, love it. Very economical in use as well, will probably last me a year. Delivery was fast, but as mentioned by other reviewers, my container also had a crack in the lid. A small one which I've left as is without any problems so far.

AMAZING, 16 May 2011

From day one my skin improved everyone keeps complimenting me on my amazing skin. Love this stuff will not be using anything other than shea butter. It has already also made a big difference to a stretchmarks in the 2 weeks i have been using it!
